Hair loss can appear as a generalized thinning of hair (male or female pattern balding), acute thinning after childbirth, acute illness, crash dieting or stress or in circular patches (alopecia areata). Hair loss becomes abnormal when one loses more than 100 strands a day. Certain medical conditions such as iron deficiency and thyroid dysfunction can contribute to hair loss and blood tests may be indicated.
Treatment options include:
- Topical minoxidil and shampoos
- Oral hair strengthening supplements
- Oral finasteride
- Injections for alopecia areata
